WOW! It is the middle of May. Almost half way through the year already. Well, I guess time really does fly. Here at SJC Bridges, we’ve been extremely busy. Two “Getting Ahead” classes were started impacting twenty investigators. Last Saturday, approximately twenty-five participants graduated from the Bridges Financial Management class. Currently, we serve four local employers and their employees at five worksites each week across two counties. And we’ve conducted a few Bridges Out of Poverty presentations and professional development workshops. And… WE’RE JUST GETTING’ STARTED!

The Community Foundation and The United Way of Elkhart County joined forces to bring to Elkhart author and speaker, Ruby Payne, who had the audience of 900 plus laughing, thinking, and being challenged as she shared stories and research, and she shed light on the hidden rules of class. Ruby’s first book, “A Framework for Understanding Poverty” served to begin a movement which has spun other books and Bridges Out of Poverty communities throughout the United States and abroad. These concepts provide the framework on which St. Joseph County Bridges Out of Poverty is based.
