May 9 Monthly Networking Meeting: Housing

Join us next Monday, May 9, to investigate Housing as a Community Resource.

Some of the questions we will ask include:

  • Did you grow up in a house or apartment?
  • What is the shortest amount of time you’ve lived in a space? The longest?
  • How connected do you feel to your neighbors or neighborhood?
  • How is housing related to employment?
  • What are the benefits of your housing situation?
  • How secure, stable or safe is your housing situation?

We had a fantastic conversation about Transportation last month, as we investigated the pros and cons of different modes of transportation, including riding the bus, driving your own car, using a friend’s car, walking, riding a bike, and taking a taxi.

Thanks to Barnaby’s Pizza for donating pizza for this Monday’s meal! Thanks to The Pokagon Fund for their continued generous support of our work.

Be sure to RSVP at 246.0533 if you are coming!

April 11 Monthly Networking Meeting

Join us from 5:30-7:30pm at the Charles Martin Youth Center, 802 Lincolnway West.
Dinner is a pasta and salad bar. Thank you, Delonda Blake, for dinner!

Join the conversation on the transportation needs for people in poverty in our community. We will consider questions like:
  • What impact does transportation have on getting ahead?
  • What form of transportation is used most often and why: bus, cars, walking, biking?
  • What impact does transportation have on getting to work, making appointments, or doing errands?
  • How do you overcome transportation pitfalls (car breaks down, bus is late, sidewalks aren’t cleared in the winter)?
  • How could we improve transportation in South Bend?
Guest speakers: Oliver Davis, District 6 City Council Member and Transpo Board Member, and Judy Fox, Notre Dame Associate Clinical Professor of Law.

Please RSVP to 246-0533 and bring a friend!

Come and join us for an activity around a new unit in Getting Ahead that could help you be a better ally.

Day One and Day Two Rocked!

We had two very successful trainings: Day One on February 4 with 110 people (despite being right after the awful blizzard!) and Day Two on March 17 with Jodi Pfarr with 75 people. Some of the comments were:
  • “Jodi was Fabulous. It was so so so helpful to hear these things from her. Incredibly engaging and helpful tools for the work I’m in.”
  • “Very worthwhile. I loved the presenter’s energy and the frequent breaks to process things verbally at the tables. “
  • “There is a lot of material…The training could be a 4 day training between the first one and today’s.”
  • “Bridges ROCKS!”
If you want to catch Jodi or get one of your colleagues, board members or neighbors to attend, here are her next workshops:
  • Day One: April 19 in Rochester, IN. Contact Tami at (574) 223-3227 or tami@nicf.org.
  • Day Two: April 30 in Hillsdale, Mi. Contact Hillsdale United Way at 517-439-5050

Thank you to The Pokagon Fund for their support of these events.
