January 30, 1944 to March 20, 2011
Andrea Johnson was our colleague, board member and dear friend. She leaves behind a beautiful daughter, Karen King, and son-in-law, Howard King.
Andrea was a tireless leader and a catalyst for change in our community in many settings and through many organizations — and an inspiration to many – some of us near to home, but also others as far away as Australia, El Salvador, Tucson and Cincinnati.
Andrea earned her Masters of Science in Education with a concentration in counseling and human services. She didn’t confine her expertise and commitment to just the workplace, but to anyplace it was needed and any person who needed it. Andrea was an ordained minister as well: wherever she was, whatever she was doing, Andrea was a woman of God first.
Jan Pilarski, the Justice Coordinator at Saint Mary’s College said: Our students loved Andrea. Everyone who taught and worked with Andrea at Saint Mary’s loved, respected, and cherished her many contributions to our lives and to our whole campus.
Andrea loved life and was a woman of amazing courage and tenacity. Long after her body had given up, even when fighting cancer, Andrea pushed ahead. Gandhi’s words perfectly summarize her determination: “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”
Because Andrea loved both the heaven and the earth, it seems fitting that she left between a “supermoon of rare size and beauty” and the Spring Equinox. As Jan said, Let Andrea’s spirit be known and remembered and lived by each of us through concrete acts of love and service.
Dear friend, you will be missed.
