The approach is based on the idea of mutual learning and respect with two primary goals:
1) learn about what is and is not working in our community’s effort to end poverty and advocate for community change, particularly in system barriers
2) make an intentional relationship with a Getting Ahead graduate and join them in their efforts to move to self-sufficiency, solve daily problems, and build their social networks.
The commitment for an ally is:
1) Attend Monthly Networking Meetings (5:30-7:30pm, second Monday)
2) Support GA graduate(s) at MNM and possibly outside of meeting
3) Attend trainings (Bridges Out of Poverty Day One workshop and an Ally training (to be developed)
4) Problem solve with Bridges Out of Poverty staff
5) Willingness to increase awareness of your own stereotypes and class-based “hidden rules”, and look for change
6) Assist SJC Bridges in prioritizing and advocating for community change
(This work is based on the Circles Campaign model being used effectively around the country in conjunction with Bridges programs.)
