Diagnosed with cancer in 2008 at the age of forty-nine, Stewart thought that she was running on limited time but, she never once let that deter her. Now fifty-five, Stewart has been cancer free for four-and-a-half years. However, due to an excessive amount of radiation she now suffers from serious nerve damage in her right hand. Stewart makes the best of it and moves forward, continuing to be unstoppable.
Six years ago Dorrine moved to South Bend, and enrolled in classes at Ivy Tech. Despite health problems that could have easily discouraged her from completing her degree, she graduated in May 2012 with an associate’s degree in human services. She didn’t stop there -- she went on and achieved her bachelor’s degree in human services from Bethel College. Dorrine said that studying human services “was cleansing for me.”
We got to know Greg because he graduated from Getting Ahead on December 15th, 2014 from the class at La Salle Elementary Schoolalong with his fiancé, Savannah Holderman. These classes are a new partnership with School City of Mishawaka for parents of children in elementary schools to gain new perspectives and skills for building financial stablity and increasing parent engagement. Since his graduation he has been working to support his family of three while implementing the lessons he learned in the class.
